The Big Kid and The Even Bigger Kid

Monday, May 07, 2012

I proudly wear the colours that identify me as one who loves working with the children here at the Cathedral of Praise.

Even though I think the orange makes me look a bit pasty I know that I am no flaky, up at the crack of dawn…well 6:30am (any earlier, I’d be sick) to pray for the day of ministry ahead. 9:15am has arrived, Praise kids has begun! A team of amazing people ready to welcome over 100 precious children being signed into our care, sand being thrown into hair, soccer balls flying, babies crying, Yahoo, what a day to be alive!

There are two types of people who volunteer for Praise Kids; both of these types of people I believe do a top job of making Godly connections with kids each Sunday. They are the big kid and the even bigger kid.

A God follower? Yes! Responsible? Yes! Love to see children happy and laughing? Yes! Excited to see children growing in their understanding of their creator, Saviour God? Yes! Believe that life with Jesus is an adventure worth living? Yes! Love to encourage others, including the little variety in their experiences with God’s awesome presence? Yes! If you said yes to most of these statements then maybe you’re a big kid too! That’s awesome!

My 8 year old came home one day after I had been leading Praise kids and said, ”Mum, you really like doing kids ministry don’t you. I can tell! Mum, you’re like a big kid and my friends think you’re a bit crazy” (oops…I thought here we go, my son is going to tell me I shamed him…and I’ll have to resign, because I certainly can’t do it half-hearted!). Before I made any final decisions about resigning, my son very ‘matter of fact’ said that my lame jokes, try hard gangster walk and expressive dancing actually worked well at getting the attention of other kids. It also helped the new kids smile and feel more comfortable. I was so relieved when he gave me permission to keep being me! A big kid at Praise Kids!

So what is Praise Kids? It is a children’s program that runs during most Sunday morning services here at church, catering for toddlers aged 1 right through primary school and including grade 7.

In John 9:35 Jesus illustrated the servant heart and value of a little child when He took a child up in His arms saying, ”Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me, welcomes not only me but also my Father who sent me.”

Praise Kids is committed to seeing children:

GROW in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ, GO with His message of truth and hope and GLOW in His service.

Jesus said, “Let the children come”
